Financial Globalization: A Reappraisal
Panoeconomicus 2009 Volume 56, Issue 2, Pages: 143-197 doi:10.2298/PAN0902143K
[Abstract] [fulltext]
Article Abrstract:
Literatura o koristima i troškovima finansijske globalizacije za zemlje u razvoju
je naprasno porasla poslednjih godina, i to kroz mnoge, potpuno različite kanale sa
raznovršnošću očigledno konfliktnih rezultata. Još uvek je malo snažnih dokaza o rastućim
koristima široke liberalizacije kapitalnog računa, ali veći broj skorijih radova u finansijskoj
literaturi izveštava da liberalizacije tržišta akcija zaista značajno povećavaju
rast. Slično tome, dokazi zasnovani na mikroekonomskim (na nivou firme ili industrije)
podacima pokazuju određene koristi finansijske integracije i distorzivne efekte kontrola
kretanja kapitala, ali makroekonomski dokazi i dalje ne pružaju zaključke. Istovremeno,
dok neke studije zauzimaju stav da finansijska globalizacija podstiče makroekonomsku
stabilnost zemalja u razvoju, druge tvrde suprotno. Ovaj rad pokušava da pruži ujedinjen
pojmovni okvir za organizovanje ovako široke i rastuće literature, naročito naglašavajući
skorije pristupe merenju katalizatorskih i indirektnih koristi finansijske globalizacije. U

Monetary and Exchange Rate Regimes Changes: The Cases of Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia and Republic of Serbia
Panoeconomicus 2009 Volume 56, Issue 2, Pages: 199-226 doi:10.2298/PAN0902199J
[Abstract] [fulltext]
Article Abrstract:
The paper explores (former) transition economies, Poland, Czech Republic,
Slovakia and the Republic of Serbia, concerning abandonment of the exchange rate targeting
and fixed exchange rate regimes and movement toward explicit/implicit inflation
targeting and flexible exchange rate regimes. The paper identifies different subperiods
concerning crucial monetary and exchange rate regimes, and tracks the changes of specific
monetary transmission channels i.e exchange rate channel, interest rate channel,
indirect and direct influences to the exchange rate, with variance decomposition of
VAR/VEC model. The empirical results indicate that Polish monetary strategy toward
higher monetary and exchange rate flexibility has been performed smoothly, gradually
and planned, compared to the Slovak and, especially, Czech case. The comparison of
three former transition economies with the Serbian case indicate strong and persistent
exchange rate pass-through, low interest rate pass-through, significant indirect and direct
influence to the exchange rate as potential obstacles for successful inflation targeting in
the Republic of Serbia.

Coefficient of Structural Concordance and an Example of its Application: Labour Productivity and Wages in Slovenia
Panoeconomicus 2009 Volume 56, Issue 2, Pages: 227-240 doi:10.2298/PAN0902227V
[Abstract] [fulltext]
Article Abrstract:
The article presents the underlying principles, derivation and properties of a
simple descriptive measure of concordance between two analogous rank structures that
we call the coefficient of structural concordance. It is based upon the idea of Kendall’s
coefficient of concordance, which we extend to two rank structures. As the coefficient of
structural concordance is a pure intergroup measure of concordance, it is designed to
complement the Kendall’s intragroup coefficient of concordance. We apply this descriptive
measure by exploring the relationship between wages and labour productivity in
Slovenia for the period 1998–2007. We are able to confirm the hypothesis of high concordance
between wages and labour productivity, which indicates a stimulative role of
wages in production of market traded goods and services.

The Asian Crisis Contagion: A Dynamic Correlation Approach Analysis
Panoeconomicus 2009 Volume 56, Issue 2, Pages: 241-260 doi:10.2298/PAN0902241E
[Abstract] [fulltext]
Article Abrstract:
In this paper we are testing for contagion caused by the Thai baht collapse of
July 1997. In line with earlier work, shift-contagion is defined as a structural change
within the international propagation mechanisms of financial shocks. We adopt Bai and
Perron’s (1998) structural break approach in order to detect the endogenous break points
of the pair-wise time-varying correlations between Thailand and seven Asian stock market
returns. Our approach enables us to solve the misspecification problem of the crisis
window. Our results illustrate the existence of shift-contagion in the Asian crisis caused
by the crisis in Thailand.

Technology and Demand for Skilled Labor in Turkish Private Manufacturing Industries
Panoeconomicus 2009 Volume 56, Issue 2, Pages: 261-279 doi:10.2298/PAN0902261A
[Abstract] [fulltext]
Article Abrstract:
This paper examines the relationship between technology and demand for
skilled labor both historically and empirically. First, it is pointed out that the Industrial
Revolution substituted skilled labor with unskilled labor since it has a de-skilling characteristic.
Second, the skill-bias feature of Information and Communication Technologies
Revolution is suggested. Finally, the effect of technological progress on the demand for
skilled labor is tested for Turkish Private Manufacturing Industries. According to the
static panel data estimation results, there is a positive but weak relationship between
technological progress and demand for skilled labor.
